Hip, Knee and Shoulder Joint Replacement

Preparing patients for joint replacement surgery

The Ellis Medicine Joint Class is an educational program for orthopedic patients planning total hip or knee joint replacement surgery at Ellis Hospital.

It's a collaborative effort developed by your surgeon, anesthesiologist and members of the health care team at Ellis Hospital to help prepare you for your surgery and hospital experience and to guide you through your recovery process.

Joint Class Topics include:

  • Your physical therapy plan of care
  • Pre-procedure exercise program
  • Post hospital rehabilitation plan
  • Home preparation
  • Anesthesia options
  • Post-operative pain control
  • Breathing Exercises
  • Use of your bed equipment
  • Daily hospital routine
  • Hospital discharge plan

Joint Class is a general guide prepared by your health care team. Keep in mind, not all patients are exactly alike; your doctor, physical therapist or nurse may provide you with additional information to meet your specific needs. Your Joint Class will be taught by a physical therapist, an occupational therapist and registered nurses specially trained in orthopedics. The class, which is held about four weeks prior to your surgery, lasts about two hours. A light snack and beverages are served.
