Recognizing Heart Attack Symptoms

Every second counts. Don't wait.

Heart attack symptoms are not always dramatic, or even the same from one person to the next. Many heart attack victims, especially women,  have vague symptoms without classic chest pain, and may experience nausea, dizziness or anxiety. Learn to recognize the symptoms, but if you’re not sure, don’t wait. Call an ambulance and get to the Emergency Department at Ellis Hospital.

Classic Heart Attack Symptoms:

  • Persistent pain, pressure, tightness in the center of the chest, usually lasting more than 10 minutes
  • Pain radiating to jaw, neck, shoulders, arms
  • With the pain: shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness
  • Sweating

Heart Attack Symptoms for Women:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Chest pain, pressure
  • Dizziness and light-headedness 
  • Shortness of breath  
  • Profuse sweating 
  • Severe heartburn
