Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve Gastrectomy

The sleeve gastrectomy procedure

Through the sleeve gastrectomy procedure, also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy, a thin vertical "sleeve" of stomach is created using a surgical stapling device. The extra, unused portion of the stomach is removed.  This limits the amount of food that can be eaten at a meal and leads to weight loss. The patient feels full and is satisfied after eating a small amount of food because of the reduced size of the stomach.

This is a laparoscopic procedure that is the only bariatric surgery that has no malabsorption (no difficulty in absorbing nutrients from food).
