Comprehensive COPD Patient Education
About Our Program
Our COPD education program can help you better manage your disease and improve your quality of life.It is a two session disease management training and education program for patients diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Patients will meet with a Certified Pulmonary Disease Educator/Respiratory Therapist in an outpatient clinic setting to learn about the nature of the disease and normal lung function. Patients also will learn about appropriate use of medications including oxygen therapy, how to prevent respiratory infections, the importance of exercise and good nutrition, relaxation techniques, energy conservation, and how to manage an acute episode. Program includes a complete pulmonary function study. Tools and resources are provided to help each patient take an active role in managing their disease. A referral from a treating Provider is required.
What You Can Expect
You will work directly with our registered respiratory therapist who is nationally certified in pulmonary disease education. Our program follows national best practices and includes:
- Complete patient history (for accurate diagnosis and COPD severity classification)
- Pulmonary function testing
- COPD Quality of Life Assessments
- Instruction on proper medication delivery technique including use of a valved-holding chamber (spacer)
- COPD action plan with individual goals/treaments
- Smoking cessation counseling will be provided as needed
