Scholarships

The Belanger School of Nursing administers a number of scholarships provided by the school and various community based organizations. These scholarships vary in amount and are based on a variety of eligibility factors, including grade point average, financial need and residency of the applicant. A selection of the scholarships are listed below:


Laura S. Auer Scholarship
 

The Auer Scholarship was established subsequent to a bequest to The Belanger School of Nursing by Laura S. Auer. It is a full tuition scholarship awarded annually to a first year student upon enrollment.


The Arulnayagi Balasubramanian, MD Endowed Memorial Scholarship
 

Dr. Nadarajah Balasubramanian established this scholarship in memory of his wife, Dr. Arulnayagi Balasubramanian for a nursing student with a generous spirit, love of teaching and a great sense of humor. This scholarship is awarded to a second-year nursing student.   


Bessie Lillian Blanchard Award
 

Nathaniel Blanchard established a scholarship for nursing students with financial need in honor of his wife, Bessie Lillian Blanchard. The Blanchard Scholarship is awarded to second-year students in the fall semester of the second year.


Broughton Fellowship in Nursing Award
 

The Broughton Fellowship in Nursing is awarded annually to a beginning second year student who consistently demonstrates outstanding merit, industry and charm. The scholarship is awarded to a second-year student at the beginning of the fall semester.


Lurline Belanger Cummings Award


Mr. John Belanger, an Ellis Medicine Trustee, established this scholarship to honor his sister. The Lurline Belanger Cummings Scholarship is awarded annually to beginning second-year students, based on scholastic achievement. 


Margaret L. Hayes, MD Student Crisis Relief Fund


Dr. Margaret L. Hayes was born in Schenectady, NY and attended nursing school at Ellis Hospital.  Throughout her career she taught nursing, earned a medical degree from Albany Medical College, completed her residency and specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. This limited grant is awarded to student(s) in good standing who are experiencing an unexpected financial need.   


Doug E. Smith Award


The Doug E. Smith Award is given to a student who is an employee of Ellis Medicine. The student exemplifies the Making Ellis Exceptional initiatives and must be in good academic standing. This scholarship is awarded to a second-year student at the beginning of the fall semester.


Dr. Marilyn Stapleton PhD, RN Scholarship
 

Dr. Stapleton served as the Director of the Belanger School of Nursing, and upon her retirement established this scholarship fund to benefit current Ellis Medicine employees who want to become RNs and are committed to a career at Ellis Medicine. This scholarship is awarded annually to a first-year student at the start of their second semester. .


Mohawk Valley Medical Association Award
 

The MVMA Foundation, formed for charitable purposes, promotes the health of individuals living within Schenectady, Saratoga, Fulton, Montgomery, Warren, Washington, Albany, Rensselaer and Schoharie counties.  The MVMA Foundation makes distributions to organizations that engage in the promotion of health within this area either by delivering health care services or by providing public education. This scholarship is awarded to a second-year student who demonstrates scholastic achievement, financial need, and who engages in the promotion of health within this community.

The Florence LaPorta Scholarship
 

The Florence LaPorta Scholarship is awarded in honor of Florence Colorito LaPorta, a graduate of the Ellis Medicine-Belanger School of Nursing Class of 1956. This scholarship is awarded to a student who embodies the qualities of compassion and kindness, demonstrates financial need and strong moral character. This scholarship is awarded to a second-year student at the beginning of the fall semester.


Alice W. McChesney Award

 

The estate of Alice W. McChesney established this scholarship for students with financial need and scholastic achievement. Priority is given to students from Schenectady County. The scholarship is awarded to a second-year student at the beginning of the fall semester.

Schenectady County Home Bureau Scholarship
 

The Schenectady County Chapter of the New York State Federation of Home Bureaus, Inc. has established a scholarship to be awarded to a student who is a Schenectady County resident, demonstrates scholastic achievement and financial need. The scholarship is awarded to second-year student(s) at the beginning of the fall semester.
