Ellis event brings regional providers together for insights into latest advancements in care

Ellis Medicine held its 6th Annual Cardiovascular Symposium on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The event -- which attracted a capacity crowd of 130 providers from throughout the region to the Rivers Resort in Schenectady -- focused on the theme of cardio-oncology. (Scroll down for photos from the event.)

Simply put, cardio-oncology examines the relationship between cancer treatment and heart disease. The expectation was that by the end of the program, providers would be able to:

  • Identify signs and symptoms of cardiac amyloidosis, a condition in which faulty proteins build up in the heart.
  • Describe cardiovascular side effects of oncologic therapeutic treatment.
  • Identify the diagnosis and treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM}, a condition in which muscle tissues of the heart become thickened

Each of the five speakers practice at Ellis Medicine in Schenectady. The speakers contributed to these overall objectives with specific takeaways based on his or her area of expertise.

Dr. Saddam Abisse, Chief of Cardiology at Ellis, provided an overview of the different types of amyloidosis.. He  spoke on the importance of early diagnosis of AL amyloidosis, also known as primary amyloidosis. Discussed treatment options for ATTR amyloidosis.

Dr. Tallat Mahmood, Medical Director of the Roswell Park Care Network site at Ellis Hospital, provided attendees with the information needed to understand and speak on the importance of the field of cardio-oncology. She also armed them with the knowledge of chemotherapy drugs and their effects on the heart; as well as how to identify risk factors for patients developing cardiac toxicity.

Dr. Thomas Marino, a cardiologist with Cardiology Associates of Schenectady, discussed how immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) work and explained the potential cardiac complications of such therapies. He also educated attendees on the management of myocarditis, the most common, and potentially fatal, cardiovascular side effect of ICI.

Dr. Christopher Dolinksy, Radiation Oncologist with Northeastern Radiation Oncology PLLC, addressed the providers with the objective of helping them understand the risk factors for the development of radiation-induced cardiac toxicity and informing them of the diseases that are treated with radiation that may place patients at risk for cardiac toxicity.

Finally, Dr. Robert Joy, a specialist in adult cardiology and electrophysiology with Cardiology Associates of Schenectady, discussed screening for and diagnosis of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) as well as the prevention of sudden cardiac death.

The Cardiovascular Symposium has become one of Ellis Medicine’s most popular annual events, consistently drawing a full house of engaged providers from across the region. We extend our sincere gratitude to the speakers for sharing their expertise and to the attendees for their enthusiasm and dedication to learning and advancing patient care. With this year's focus on cardio-oncology providing new insights into managing cardiac health in cancer patients, we’re already looking forward to the invaluable discussions that next year’s symposium will bring. Stay tuned for details on our 7th Annual Cardiovascular Symposium!
