Successful collaboration with the NYS Department of Health and area nursing homes ensures seamless care for residents
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Ellis Medicine is pleased to announce the successful transition of all residents from the Ellis Residential and Rehabilitation Center (ERRC) on its McClellan Street campus. Working in close collaboration with the New York State Department of Health and area nursing homes, Ellis has ensured that residents have been placed in suitable facilities that meet their unique care needs.
“This successful transition exemplifies the strength of collaboration between the Ellis team, the state Department of Health, and nursing homes throughout the Capital Region,” said Chris Jordan, Chief Operating Officer at Ellis Medicine. “We are deeply grateful to our colleagues for their commitment to providing safe and compassionate care during this challenging time—and for the collaboration and cooperation with our residents and their families. These decisions are never easy, but when we work together for the good of the community, we can achieve favorable outcomes.”
Ellis announced in June that it had made the difficult decision regarding ERRC following the state Department of Health’s approval of its closure plan. The plan committed to a safe and well-ordered transfer of ERRC’s 50 residents. Ellis also committed to retaining all ERRC employees, offering positions elsewhere in the organization.

“Closing ERRC was a heart-wrenching decision, especially considering the excellent care our staff has provided over the years,” said Paul Milton, President & CEO of Ellis Medicine. “However, the underutilization of the 18-acre McClellan campus and the resulting financial burden have made it clear that we must always be evaluating where we focus our resources to remain viable in a challenging healthcare environment.”
The future of the McClellan campus
Ellis has entered into contract to sell the 18-acre McClellan Street Health Center to Sequence Development and Spraragen Partners. This transaction will pave the way for the redevelopment and revitalization of the property. Ellis Medicine’s primary care/Family Health Center practice and the Belanger School of Nursing will continue to operate on the McClellan campus.
