Ellis, the Belanger School of Nursing and filling the nursing gap
Monday, June 19, 2023
SCHENECTADY — With hospitals across the region and state facing nursing shortages, Ellis Medicine’s Belanger School of Nursing has recorded its highest ever level of enrollment heading into the 2023-24 school year, The Daily Gazette reports.
Belanger Nursing School Dean Dawne DeVoe Olbrych told The Gazette that the school is anticipating 90 freshman students will arrive in the fall class, 10% higher than last year’s enrollment.
With the pandemic taking a toll on the nursing profession, The Gazette reports, hospitals statewide are projected to face a shortage of approximately 40,000 nurses by 2030.
“Certainly the COVID pandemic has made many people who were nearing the end of the profession leave the nursing profession because they were concerned about COVID,” Olbrych said. “It’s difficult to be a nurse in the middle of a pandemic. We’re very fortunate at Ellis that we’ve implemented a number of systems to provide the staff with emotional support to help them manage the issues associated with working in health care during a global pandemic.”
