Know Your Metabolic Rate to Lose Weight
There are countless choices for how to lose weight; but actually losing the weight is the hard part.
It makes sense that in order to be successful losing weight, a person needs to consume fewer calories than they burn each day. But where do you start so you can do that?
One of the first steps to actually losing weight is to understand your individual energy needs and the amount of calories you should consume. The Indirect Calorimetry test measures your resting metabolic rate and helps to accurately understand your metabolism. Understanding this individual measure will allow for an accurate reading of how many calories can be consumed to lose, maintain or even gain weight.
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
The calories that body uses to function (heart rate, brain function, breathing, etc.) Typically, this accounts for approximately 75% of a person’s energy needs.
Determining Your Daily Calorie Intake
The total calories you need each day is the sum of the resting metabolic rate (RMR) plus lifestyle or work activities and any exercise. Based on the amount of calories calculated, you will lose weight when you consume fewer calories than this number. You will gain weight if you consume more calories than that number.
Ellis Bariatric Care is the first and only healthcare facility in the Capital Region to offer the Indirect Calorimetry test to help you understand your metabolism and daily calorie intake. The Indirect Calorimter is a handheld device that measures oxygen consumption and evaluates an individual’s RMR.
